Laina Dawes is the author of What Are You Doing Here? A Black Woman’s Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal(Bazillion Points Books, 2012). A music and cultural critic, her writings and photography can be found in various print, online publications and radio programs, such as Hazlitt, The Wire (UK), Fader, Bandcamp, Bitch Magazine, Broken Pencil, Toronto Star and CBC Radio.

An accomplished public speaker, Laina has guest lectured at colleges and universities and presented at music and academic conferences in Canada and the United States. She also served as an adjunct Lecturer, teaching popular music criticism at Eugene Lange College, The New School. Laina is also a second year PhD student in Ethnomusicology at Columbia University. Originally from Kingston Ontario, she currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
